General information for licensed practices, not legal, regulatory or medical advice.

This piece supports our complete guide to adding peptides and wellness services to a med spa.

What supplies does a med spa need?

Adjust to your menu and your medical director's policies. A starting checklist:

1. Clinical consumables

  • Syringes and needles in the sizes your medical director's policies specify
  • Alcohol prep pads, gauze, cotton rounds and bandages
  • Exam gloves (nitrile, multiple sizes)
  • Sterile drapes and single use applicators
  • Topical numbing products, only if your medical director's written policies include them; prescription strength products come from licensed pharmacies

2. Infection control and sharps

  • FDA cleared sharps containers in every treatment room
  • Surface disinfectant on your approved list
  • Hand hygiene supplies at every sink and station
  • Biohazard bags and a licensed medical waste pickup contract
  • Spill kit and exposure control plan, as OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard requires (29 CFR 1910.1030)

3. Prescription products

  • Only products ordered under a licensed prescriber, from licensed 503A pharmacies or FDA registered 503B outsourcing facilities
  • Medical grade refrigerator with a temperature log, for anything that needs cold storage
  • Locked storage and a dispensing log

4. Front desk and documentation

  • Intake and consent forms your counsel has approved
  • Lot and expiration log (paper or in your EMR)
  • Receiving checklist for every delivery

5. Treatment room basics

  • Treatment chair paper, pillow covers and linens
  • Mirrors, headbands and client prep items
  • Emergency kit as your medical director specifies

How do you set par levels for med spa supplies?

A par level is the minimum quantity of an item you keep on hand before you reorder. Set one for every item on the checklist above:

  1. Count weekly use. Track how many of each item you use over four normal weeks.
  2. Add lead time. Note how many days each supplier takes to deliver.
  3. Add a buffer. Keep extra for busy weeks and shipping delays.
  4. Write it down. Par = weekly use, plus use during lead time, plus buffer.
  5. Review monthly. Adjust when your menu or volume changes.

How should a med spa reorder supplies?

  • Set one reorder day. A fixed weekly count and order keeps gaps rare.
  • Assign one owner. One staff member counts, one approves prescription orders.
  • Rotate stock. First expiring, first out.
  • Log every lot. Record lot numbers and expiration dates at receiving, so you can act fast on a recall. See our guide to certificates of analysis and batch traceability.
  • Check temperatures. Log refrigerator readings daily.

How do you know a supplier is licensed?

Prescription products must come from licensed sources. Before you order:

  1. Confirm the pharmacy's license with the NC Board of Pharmacy or its home state board.
  2. Check 503B facilities on FDA's registered outsourcing facilities list.
  3. Avoid any seller that skips license and NPI verification. Products labeled "research use only" are not for human use and don't belong in a clinic.
  4. Use FDA's BeSafeRx guidance on spotting unsafe online pharmacies.
